Genomics of Gene Expression

DEANN_300x120The project, financed by the European Union under a Marie Curie action, seeks to strengthen research partnership by creating an exchange program which will develop a shared scientific knowhow community in the field of DNA analysis.

Ana Conesa, Head of The Genomics of the Gene Expression Lab at the Prince Felipe Research Centre (CIPF), Valencia, Spain, coordinates a European project that fosters the development of DNA analysis in an European Latin America partnership.
On November 14th the Kick-off event took place, announcing the beginning of the project Marie Curie-IRSES named “DEANN”. The DEANN project aims to strengthen collaborations between researchers in the field of genome analysis by developing a exchange program. The project’s aim is to create a European-Latin American research network to improve scientific excellence and competitiveness of its members and to provide a framework for international quality training for PhD students and post-doctoral researchers.

The Project financed by the European Union is formed by a collaborative network of 12 prestigious entities. Six research institutions and universities from four European Union countries and six research entities from four Latin American countries. The project partners are: Prince Felipe Research Centre (Spain), Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain), Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet, (Sweden), Universita degli Studi di Udine (Italy), The Genome Analysis Centre (United Kingdom), University College London (United Kingdom), Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (Argentina), Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (Argentina), Centro de Investigación de estudios avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Mexico), Instituto Nacional de Medicina Genómica (Mexico), Fundação Universidade de Brasilia (Brazil), Instituto Antártico Chileno (Chile).

The project will accomplish 442 exchanges in the Scientific Community and will allow the organization of Workshops and Summer Schools in the field of analyzing NGS sequencing data (Next Generation Sequencing Technologies) representing the most advanced technologies in genome analysis. The total budget of the project is 928.200,00 Euros with duration of 4 years.

The DEANN project will address challenges in genome sequencing analysis, both in its application to personalized medicine and in biotechnology applications, food processing and environmental. The project, for instance, will study the genetic variation in European and Latin American populations to find genes susceptible to diseases, characterize biological diversity in endemic species and will develop storage and processing methods for “Big Data” applied to Life Sciences. It also provides for the participation of technology transfer experts in the project, in order to move developments to social reality.
This project aims to strengthen scientific cooperation ties between Latin America and Europe by working together on the challenges of future genomics research.
